Silver

CSIT 120

For the global experience, I chose a course I took at my community college named CSIT 120, diversity in Technological Society. In this course I explored the use of technology to connect and collaborate to improve the lives of diverse individuals and societies world-wide. Topics for this course included the Internet, mobile devices, social media, and other emerging technologies. Global communities and issues related to stereotypes, discrimination, power and privilege and other cross-cultural social issues are discussed. This course was 3 credit hour class; therefore, it is a silver level.

This course aligns perfectly with the overall expectation for a grand challenge global experience. This course delved into the ways technology can be harnessed to connect and collaborate in order to enhance the lives of diverse individuals and societies worldwide. By examining global communities and delving into subjects like stereotypes, discrimination, power, privilege, and other cross-cultural social issues, CSIT 120 provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the complexities and challenges of a diverse world. It fostered a global perspective by highlighting the interconnectedness of societies and the need for inclusive and equitable technological solutions.

Overall, the CSIT 120 course provided me with a grand challenge global experience by equipping me with the knowledge and skills to navigate the complexities of a diverse technological society. It broadened my perspective, deepened my understanding of global challenges, and inspired me to use my engineering skills to contribute to solutions that promote inclusivity, equality, and positive social impact on a global scale.

Making a Globe

Learning Objectives

Program Wide Learning Objective

Perspectivism:

In this class I learned about different cultures and how they interact with people. Exposure to different cultures, broadened my perspective and enabled me to approach problems and solutions from different angles.

Integrity

This course emphasized the importance of ethical conduct and integrity in the field of computer science by covering topics such as cybersecurity and data privacy

Core Global Perspective Learning Objective

Global Citizenship

IThis course emphasized the importance of global citizenship in the field of computer science and information technology by addressing topics such as digital divide, ethical considerations in global technology use, and the role of technology in addressing global challenges. Through the course, I explored how my knowledge and skills can contribute to creating a positive global impact and promoting equitable access to technology worldwide.

CulturaAwareness

CSIT 120 course has exposed me to a diverse range of cultural contexts within the field of information technology. I was given a project where the global application of technology and the varying cultural considerations in different regions were highlighted. This made me become more aware of various cultures

Openness to Difference

CSIT120 has encouraged me to be open-minded and embrace differences in ideas, perspectives, and approaches to problem-solving. This was fostered through class discussions, exposure to diverse technologies, and considering the ethical implications of technology used in different cultural contexts I learned to appreciate and respect the value of different viewpoints, which then enhanced my ability to navigate and thrive in a diverse and interconnected world.

Personalized Learning Objective

Identify and address ethical issues arising from cultural or national differences.

In this course, I learned about how the use of artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in various applications raises concerns about bias and discrimination. Cultural or national differences can influence the data sets used to train AI systems, leading to biased outcomes that perpetuate inequalities. By understanding and addressing these cultural differences, we can work towards developing fair and unbiased algorithms that respect diverse perspectives and values.
