Welcome!

Hello

I'm Jawairia Amjad

Welcome to my GCSP E-portfolio! I am a senior Chemical Engineering student at University of Maryland- Baltimore County (UMBC) graduating in May 2023.

Ever since I was a child, I always had the passion to change the world for the better. Grand Challenges Scholars Program (GCSP) gave me the opportunity to gain experience in  different program areas to solve the greatest challenges our world is facing today.  These program areas gave me diverse engineering perspectives from entrepreneurship work , interdisciplinarity courses, global views, research, and impact on younger individuals through my service learning experiences. With these perspectives, I am able to view and tackle challenges the world faces today.

About

Grand Challenge Scholars Program

The Grand Challenge Scholars Program (GCSP) aims to prepare students to become future leaders and problem solvers in addressing the world's most pressing challenges. The program was created by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in response to the "Grand Challenges for Engineering" that were identified as crucial for the betterment of humanity.

The GCSP encourages students to explore and engage with five program-wide learning objectives such as Service Learning, Research Experience, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Interdisciplinary and finally Global Perspectives. By participating in the Grand Challenge Scholars Program, students gain a broader perspective on the world's challenges, develop critical skills in research, entrepreneurship, and global citizenship, and become equipped to tackle complex problems and make a positive impact in their chosen fields.

Engineering the Tools of Scientific Discovery

The grand challenge I decided to tackle for this program is Engineering the Tools of Scientific Discovery. Engineering tools of scientific discovery have the potential to address critical global challenges and improve the quality of life for people around the world. From developing advanced medical imaging devices to designing efficient renewable energy systems, engineering solutions can revolutionize various fields and have a profound impact on society. By choosing the Grand Challenge of "Engineering Tools of Scientific Discovery," I will be at the forefront of innovation, contribute to solving pressing global challenges, collaborate with experts from diverse disciplines, and make a lasting impact on society while advancing my own personal and professional growth as an engineer.

Train Station

"The ideal engineer is a composite ... He is not a scientist, he is not a mathematician, he is not a sociologist or a writer; but he may use the knowledge and techniques of any or all of these disciplines in solving engineering problems."
